The temperatures dip, so let us prepare for spring!

In the spirit of our gatherings from the past two years, the Franco American
program at UMaine invites you to join with other writers and artists in a
weekend of reading, performance, presentation, and discussion.

We’re excited to create once more a space for meeting old friends and new,
and for coming together around our creative expressions – whatever form they might
take.

Our gathering will be held at the Darling Marine Center in Walpole, Maine,
the weekend of May 17, 18, and 19, 2013.

We will begin Friday evening with dessert, an opening presentation, and a
roundtable discussion.
Saturday will be devoted to you and your work. It is once again our hope
that this gathering can be a safe space for participants
to share their own projects and receive feedback. You’re invited to bring any
kind of creative work you’re willing to share with the group. Everyone will
have an opportunity to present for an equal, set amount of time. To give you an
idea of our program, last year’s gathering was filled with poems and short
fiction, storytelling and dramatic pieces, slideshow presentations, novel
excerpts, music, short film, and the conversations they sparked.

A Saturday night soirée is not out of the question. Bring your instruments!

We’ll conclude on Sunday with breakfast and a wrap-up discussion.

The program is free for you. We will be paying for room and board for all of
you who would like to join us and we will not be asking for money at the event.
If you are able to spare, however, we ask that you consider sending a donation
to help make our gathering an annual event. This will be our third consecutive
year; we hope for many more.

All donations are tax-deductible and can be made through the Franco American
Studies program website (http://umaine.edu/francoamericanstudies).
Click on the “give now” button near the top; we can be found under the College
of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Please let us know by Monday, April
15 if you will be joining us, and
if you intend to present any of your work on Saturday. We would also like to
know how long you will be staying, if you have a roommate preference, and any
other information you’d like to share.

Hope to hear from you!
Fuller, Jr., whose novel "Unnatural Deaths" takes place in a fictional Franco-American town in Maine with several Franco-American characters.

The reading at 2 p.m. at the Centre in Crossland Hall is free and public.

Fuller, a resident of Winthrop, will be introduced by Augusta attorney Severin Beliveau, a Distinguished Professor of Franco American Studies at the University of Maine and Honorary Consul for France. One of Fuller's main characters in his novel, Larry Pelletier, is modeled after Beliveau, who is a native of Rumford, Maine.

Unnatural Deaths is about a tenacious police detective who finds, during the investigation of a murder of a local businessman at a hunting camp deep in the Maine woods, that the killing may be related to two others on the East Coast. The investigation leads to a complex international business plot the detective must figure out with help from a well-connected lawyer and brother of the murdered businessman.

Fuller practiced law in Maine for about 35 years and served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the United States Navy as a reserve officer. During his career, he developed extensive contacts among Maine trial lawyers and judges, law enforcement personnel, prosecutors and forensic analysts, all of which have contributed to the authentic flavor of this novel.

Additional information about Fuller and Unnatural Deaths is available on the website for the book at _www.unnaturaldeaths.com/ <http://www.unnaturaldeaths.com/>_.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3758124727211170118.post-68059412761458837852010-09-29T11:02:00.000-07:002010-09-29T11:03:37.977-07:00Quebecois harmonicaRay Lambert, just self-published an illustrated book he wrote with another musician about Quebec folk tunes including notations and music score to play them on the harmonica.

Ray is a bi-lingual Franco American from Lewiston, (now lives in Mariaville near Ellsworth) who wrote the book in both English and French in collaboration with a musician from France who also loves Quebec tunes and the harmonica.

We have heard Ray play a concert of this music on the harmonica, and with his ability to bend the notes accompanied by his feet stamping percussion, you think you are hearing a fiddler playing the old tunes.
Godefroy Desrosiers-Lauzon
INRS-UCS
385, rue Sherbrooke Est
Montréal (Québec)
H2X 1E3
Canada
cliogod@yahoo.com
Call for Papers
Canadians in the United States:
American Dreamers in their Social and Economic Context
An interdisciplinary Conference, 12-13 May 2010, Montréal.
Relations with the United States have been one of the foremost themes of Canadian economics,
history, and culture, if only because twentieth-century Canada is often better understood in its
continental context – better than in any other perspective. But also because the Canadian
intelligentsia has long explained its own existence in terms of Canadian-American differences, in
terms of a ponderous American economic and cultural influence.
This influence has fostered migration between the two countries, a fact that allows scholars to put
intellectual pronouncements in some perspective. What was, migrants seem to ask, the American
reality for migrating Canadians? Historians have finely documented and analyzed the exodus of
900 000 French Canadians to New England between 1840 and 1930. But less is known about the
migrant experience since 1945, when, paradoxically, Canadian intellectuals have been most vocally
alarmed at the character of American influence.
As Canada-U.S. relations are as intense, yet evolving, as ever, it appears necessary to gather
together scholars, writers and students, to explore this theme, to map its contours and nodes, to
analyze the practices and discourse attached to it, and especially to make sense of "ordinary"
Canadians' agency in it. How can the American journey of Canadians inform us on Canada-U.S.
relations, on Canada's culture, economics, society and politics? Who are those Canadians who
chose the United States? How did they define their own versions of the American Dream, and the
reality they encountered? What can they teach us about the different versions of Canadian values,
culture, and sense of community? What methods of inquiry, what new research can we see as
emerging around this theme?
The conference organizers, in collaboration with the Association for Canadian
Studies (ACS) wish to invite scholars, writers and students, from all disciplines, to a
two-day conference on the American experience of Canadians. This conference will be
held in Montreal, on the 12 and 13 of May 2010. Proposals for single papers and full panels
should arrive by 10 February 2010, either by email or regular mail. A proposal should
include the title of the presentation or panel, the coordinates and affiliation of the presenter
or panelists, and a summary of the paper or panel (250 words maximum). Questions may
be submitted to the conference's secretariat, at the Urbanization, Culture, and Society
Center of the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS-UCS), in Montreal.
Godefroy Desrosiers-Lauzon
INRS-UCS
385 Sherbrooke Street East
Montréal (Québec)
H2X 1E3
Canada
cliogod@yahoo.com
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3758124727211170118.post-14670790113859237982010-01-06T06:51:00.000-08:002010-01-06T06:52:06.424-08:00Free French books
Bonjour

Dear colleagues,

Here (hopefully) pasted and attached is an important announcement. Those of you who are interested in what we are doing for and about Franco-Americans at Keene State College
can contact me directly. Please copy me at both my e-mails: mlangfor@keene.edu and mslang@sover.net.

I’ll compile the results for the WIF list.

Amitiés,

Margaret

“Franco-American” is now an official Library of Congress search term!

All new publications concerning the Franco-American will be catalogued under this heading in the future. Even casual browsers will be able to find works written by or about Franco-Americans. This was impossible in the past.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the process of creating a new Library of Congress search term, here is a brief overview. There are very few US libraries that can help with such requests. And only certain librarians in these libraries can craft and forward the necessary documentation to the Library of Congress. Several years ago, my Librarian colleague Patrick O’Brien, and I (Margaret Langford) asked Manon Théroux, Yale Librarian, to do so. What transpired next is an exciting saga that would require more than this short note to tell in detail.

Thanks to the efforts of Rhéa Côté Robbins who created an electronic discussion list for the purpose, many Franco-Americans expressed their sentiments. I forwarded a distillation of these conversations to Manon. However, as some of you may know, the Library of Congress requires that all requests be based on a review of print materials. Manon undertook this task on our behalf, and this January we received the good news (see her letter on the next page.) Manon saw the process through to the end, even after her departure from Yale to become head of Cataloging and Media Services at George Mason University.

For all of you interested in the Franco-Americans, there is still much to be done. Many libraries contain precious hidden holdings: Franco-American writings dating back to the mid 1800’s. To uncover these treasures, here is what is needed: a willing Librarian and any information necessary to assist in this process. Some of the tools are easily available. You may be aware of Pierre Anctil’s excellent bibliography Anctil, Pierre. A Franco-American Bibliography: New England. Bedford, NH: National Material Development Center, 1979. The Algonquin called it Québec, or "where the river narrows,". In 2008, Quebec City, Canada celebrates the 400th anniversary of Champlain's feat.

Many thousands of immigrants of French heritage from Quebec found new lives in Manchester, New Hampshire, particularly during the era of industrialization from the mid-19th Century into the early 20th Century. In celebration of the 400th anniversary of Quebec, UNH Manchester, the Millyard Museum and The Majestic Theatre have partnered to offer a series of community events.

Robert B. Perreault, instructor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literature at Saint Anselm College, said "The attention to and enthusiasm for all things French that the 400th anniversary of Québec City in 2008 is generating throughout North America offers Manchester's Franco-American community a unique opportunity to highlight its own history as well as its contributions toward making New Hampshire's Queen City a colorful patchwork of cultures and languages."

Thursday, September 25, 6:30– 8:00 PM
Taste of the Old Country in the New: The Franco-Americans of Manchester
Manchester is one example of the many industrial centers that attracted immigrants from Quebec in numbers large enough to warrant the creation and maintenance of an infrastructure of religious, educational, social, cultural, and commercial institutions that helped preserve this community's language and traditions. Her rollercoaster ride of self-discovery leads her to some surprising places. From the origins of Franco-American Spaghetti to the textile mills of Skowhegan, from logging camps on the Canadian border to being hypnotized to find the French in her head, Susan is determined to reclaim her first language and in the process reclaims a whole lot more. She's doing the assimilation samba and it's not as easy as it looks. The play is performed in English with some French references. To be held at UNH Manchester, 400 Commercial Street, in the third floor auditorium. Funding provided by the Smyth Foundation (free event)

Saturday, October 11, 9:00 AM – 12: 30 PM
"Miles of Mills" Walk
Presented by the Manchester Historic Association
$20 general public, $15 members of the Manchester Historic Association
Walk the entire Amoskeag Manufacturing Company millyard with local historian Robert Perreault and Aurore Eaton, Interim Executive Director of the Manchester Historic Association.
